Balmain · Summer 2026 · Private Rooms for 16 & 30

Christmas, in a heritage cottage.

Two private rooms on Darling Street, a courtyard that's heated and weatherproof, and no group service fee — in the one month of the year when everybody else adds one.

The Setting

Sandstone, greenery, and a roof that opens.

A Sydney Christmas doesn't want a function room. It wants shade, air, and somewhere an afternoon can stretch out — which is what a heritage cottage with a garden has always been rather good at.

The Atrium is the hybrid one. A private courtyard at the back of the venue with a louvered roof overhead, so it's properly alfresco when the weather's behaving and completely covered when it turns. Stone walls, mature greenery, its own bar for welcome drinks. The garden does most of the decorating, which saves you a trip to the party shop.

The Loft is the light one. Floating above the main restaurant, it fills with natural light straight through the afternoon — the room for a long December lunch nobody's in a hurry to leave. As the evening settles in it turns cosy without turning dark.

Three Very Different Decembers

Whose Christmas is it?

The Work One

Office Christmas party

You've been handed the job and you'd like it to take an afternoon, not a fortnight. One room, one tab, one contact who answers email. Kris Kringle without an audience, speeches that don't need a microphone, and a finish time nobody has to police. Best in The Loft.

The Annual One

Christmas with friends

The dinner you've all been meaning to organise since about March. Long table, everything down the middle, oysters to start because it's December and you've earned them. Split it however you like — host tab, hybrid, or everyone on their own phone. Best in The Atrium.

The Proper One

Family Christmas lunch

Nobody cooking, nobody washing up, nobody stuck at the far end of a table they can't leave. Kids twelve and under order from the kids menu, the courtyard means the young ones aren't trapped in one chair, and lunch can run as long as lunch wants to.

December Questions

Asked every year.

Do your prices or fees change in December?
No. Same feasting menus, same prices, same three-hour sitting, and still no group service fee — which is the bit most venues change in December. The only surcharges are the standard 10% Sunday and 15% public holiday rates, which apply venue-wide to every diner all year round.
How far ahead should we book?
For a Friday or Saturday in December, September is not too early. For a weekday lunch or dinner you've usually got until early November. There are only two private rooms, so once a date is taken it's taken.
Is a weekday better than a Friday night?
Often, yes — and we'll say so honestly. A Tuesday or Wednesday means the room is calmer, the kitchen has more room to move, and you'll get the space you actually wanted rather than whatever's left. Long lunches in The Loft in mid-December are the best-kept secret of the month.
Can we do Secret Santa or hand out gifts?
Of course — that's rather the point of a private room. You can run the whole thing without an audience or a queue forming behind you.
Can we decorate for Christmas?
Yes — flowers, balloons and banners are all welcome, and the greenery in The Atrium does a fair bit of the work already. One strict rule: no confetti. That includes the festive kind.
Are you open on Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve?
No — we're closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, so our team gets the break too. Every other day in December runs on our usual hours, and the private rooms are available right through to the 23rd.
What if our numbers change closer to the date?
Completely normal in December. We confirm final guest numbers the week of your booking, so book with your best estimate and adjust as RSVPs land.
