Darling Street, Balmain · Est. 2012

One of the Inner West's best-loved restaurants

A heritage cottage on Darling Street, ten minutes from Rozelle, Lilyfield, Leichhardt and Annandale — the garden courtyard by day, the fireplace by night, and the Inner West's excuse for a long lunch since 2012.

The kitchen

Seafood, Riverine Meats, Seasonal Produce

Sustainably caught Australian seafood, premium Riverine meats and produce that tastes like it was picked this morning. From $3 Sydney rock oysters at aperitivo to a 1kg Fiorentina to share.

A Wine List Worth the Trip

The cottage

Garden by Day, Fire by Night

Inner West questions

Where in the Inner West is The Cottage?
342 Darling Street, Balmain — the heritage cottage at the heart of the main street, between Rozelle and Balmain East. Rozelle, Lilyfield, Leichhardt, Annandale and Drummoyne are all within about ten minutes by car, and the 441 and 445 buses stop close by.
When are you open for lunch?
Lunch from midday Wednesday to Sunday and dinner seven nights. From Monday 14 September we open from 12pm every day, so it's lunch seven days. Aperitivo runs 3–5pm Wednesday to Sunday with $3 Sydney rock oysters and $12 spritzes.
Do I need to book?
Weekends, yes — the courtyard fills. Book online in under a minute for parties of up to ten. Walk-ins are always welcome when we can squeeze you in, and the street-side tables are kept for them.
Can you take a group?
Yes. À la carte bookings run to ten guests. For larger gatherings there are two private rooms — The Atrium (16) and The Loft (30) — with feasting menus from $75 a head, a three-hour sitting and no group service fee. See group dining.
Is it family friendly? Dog friendly?
Both. There's a kids menu and under-18s are welcome with a parent or guardian. Dogs on a lead are welcome in the front courtyard and at the street-side tables — here's how that works.
Can we BYO? Is there parking?
We're fully licensed, so no BYO and no corkage — the wine list is the point. Parking is timed street parking on Darling Street and the side streets; there's no car park of our own.
Is the venue wheelchair accessible?
Honestly, not well — it's an 1800s cottage with steps at both entrances, no ramp and no accessible bathroom, and The Loft is up a flight of stairs. Call us on (02) 8084 8185 and we'll talk through what's workable.
