Finding us & booking

Where is The Cottage Balmain and how do I get there?

The Cottage Balmain is at 342 Darling Street, Balmain NSW 2041, in a heritage cottage on the main street. There is no dedicated car park; guests use timed street parking on Darling Street and the surrounding side streets, so allow a few minutes to find a spot. Buses run along Darling Street, and Balmain East ferry wharf is a walk down the eastern end of Darling Street.

Do you take walk-ins, or do I need to book?

Both. Our street-side seats on Darling Street are kept aside for walk-ins, so a spontaneous spritz or a late lunch is always possible. For a table in the dining rooms or the courtyard, and for any group, we recommend booking — weekends and evenings fill early.

What are your opening hours?

The Cottage Balmain is open Monday and Tuesday from 5pm to 10pm, Wednesday and Thursday from midday to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from midday to 11pm, and Sunday from midday to 10pm. Aperitivo hour runs from 3pm to 5pm daily, excluding Mother's Day and public holidays.

We are closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

From Monday 14 September 2026 we open at midday on Mondays and Tuesdays as well — lunch, seven days a week.

How long do I have the table, and what is your cancellation policy?

Standard bookings are on a two-hour sitting unless longer has been confirmed with us; group bookings in The Atrium or The Loft get a generous three hours. Credit card details are required for all bookings, and tables are held for 15 minutes past the booking time.

A no-show fee of $10 per person applies if guests do not arrive, numbers drop, or a booking is cancelled with less than three hours notice. Group bookings take a $100 deposit, which comes straight off your final bill; it is not refundable on cancellation, but we are happy to reschedule.

What happens if I have booked an outdoor table and it rains?

Outdoor tables occasionally have to be cancelled in wet weather. We will always try to move you inside, but indoor seating cannot be guaranteed, so on an uncertain day it is worth giving us a call.

Food & drink

Can you cater for gluten-free, vegan, or other dietary requirements?

Yes. Our menus mark gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free and nut-containing dishes, and the kitchen can adapt many others. Tell us when you book, or tell your waiter on the night, and we will take care of it.

For group bookings we collect every guest's dietaries and allergies in the week before your booking, linked to their first name, so the floor team can handle it without any fuss on the day.

Can I bring my own wine? Do you charge corkage?

We are a licensed venue and do not offer BYO, so there is no corkage. Our list runs to around 200 wines, and our floor team are happy to find you something for the occasion or the budget you have in mind.

Are children welcome, and what is on the kids menu?

Children are very welcome. Kids aged 12 and under order from our kids menu, which has crumbed fish ($16, gluten-free), chicken nuggets ($14), spaghettini pasta ($14, vegetarian), vanilla ice cream ($6), hot chocolate ($6) and babyccinos ($2).

Anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian with them. We do not host children's birthday parties.

What surcharges apply?

A 1% surcharge applies to card payments, 10% on Sundays and 15% on public holidays. The Sunday and public holiday surcharges apply to every diner, including group bookings. There is no group service fee, and cakeage is $3 per person if you bring a celebration cake.

The spaces

Is the courtyard covered or heated?

The main courtyard is genuinely outdoors — shaded by mature trees and large umbrellas, and lovely in warm weather, but not enclosed. The Atrium, our private courtyard at the rear, has a louvered roof and heating, so it is comfortable in any weather. Inside, the dining rooms have a fireplace that makes them the warmest seat in Balmain through winter.

Are dogs allowed at The Cottage Balmain?

Yes — the outdoor courtyard is pet friendly, so your dog is welcome to join you there. Dogs are not able to come into the indoor dining rooms.

What is the largest group you can seat?

Thirty guests is our maximum. We have two group spaces: The Atrium, a heated private courtyard seating 16, with a minimum of 9 for exclusive use; and The Loft, our mezzanine room seating 30, with a minimum of 18. These are the only two spaces we offer for groups — we do not do whole-venue hire.

Groups of 10 or more dine from one of our Group Feasting Menus, The Feast at $75 per person or The Whole Affair at $95 per person. There is more detail on the group dining page.

Is The Cottage Balmain wheelchair accessible?

No. We would rather tell you plainly than have you discover it on arrival: The Cottage Balmain is not wheelchair accessible. There are steps at both entrances, no ramps, and no accessible bathroom, and The Loft is a mezzanine reached by stairs.

If access is a concern for you or someone in your party, please call us on (02) 8084 8185 before booking and we will tell you frankly whether we can make your visit comfortable.

Is there a dress code?

There is no dress code at The Cottage Balmain. Come as you are — we are a neighbourhood restaurant, and you are as welcome in shorts after the beach as you are dressed up for an anniversary.
